An important part of the OCC's work is to provide paediatric training for osteopaths, so that more children are able to receive osteopathic treatment across the UK. For the last 10 years, the OCC has been training post-graduate osteopaths in paediatrics. Initially this was a two-year Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy (DPO) but this training has now been replaced by a Masters degree, an MSc in Paediatric Osteopathy (MScPO).The MScPO is an exciting programme of theoretical and clinical study that recognises that paediatric osteopathy is a speciality and the role it has to play in mainstream paediatric care. This course is a development of the successful Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy, which was run successfully for 10 years by the Osteopathic Centre for Children (OCC). The MSc is a result of collaboration between the OCC and the British School of Osteopathy (BSO) and is validated by the University of Bedfordshire. Students benefit from the wealth of clinical experience available at the OCC clinic in Clerkenwell and Manchester together with the BSO's expertise in osteopathic education. Students have access to the BSO's extensive library and learning resources as well as being able to take advantage of the learning resources available through the University of Bedfordshire. The course runs over two years and starts in September each year. The maximum number of students accepted in any one year is 25. The course consists of eight units. The seven non-clinical units are: birth and delivery; research and postgraduate learning; respiration; immune system; anatomy; CNS and orthopaedics. These units are taught during specified weekends at the BSO's premises in Southwark, London. Assessments consist of written case studies together with year-end written exams. The eighth unit is a clinical unit, which takes place at the OCC clinic in Clerkenwell, London. Students will be expected to attend the OCC for one day a week for 46 weeks each year. During this unit students will treat patients under the supervision of tutors and consultants. Students receive clinic assessments each term, and will be required to complete a portfolio of clinical learning based on critical incident analysis. The clinical learning portfolio takes the place of the research-based dissertations required in traditional MSc courses. We are confident that this course will provide an interesting and challenging programme through which students can gain the knowledge and skills required to practise effectively in the field of paediatrics.
